An DOUBLE SILVER medal winning wine at the Air New Zealand wine awards, this is a boutique Pinot Gris to enjoy any time of the year. Nelson region's natural resources are bountiful and the dense Moutere clay soils in particular, are capable of producing intensely powerful fruit flavours, adding weight and mouth feel to the wines. We have it for you today at the wonderful price of $10/bottle.
This vintage displays wonderful aromas of pear, quince skins and honey while the palate is rich with creamy flavours of peaches, pear and ripe quince. A soft, rounded mouthfeel is supported by a gentle, clean acidity on the finish.
This wine picked up Silver at both the AIR New Zealand wine awards and the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2010.
In order to produce a Pinot Gris wine which displays a richness of varietal characters, an extensive amount of canopy and cluster management needs to be carried out in the vineyard prior to harvest. At Ruby Bay they made three separate passes though the vineyard in order to achieve this. First, they selectively shoot thinned, then a few weeks later they thinned the bunches. In late February and as the grapes begin to ripen, they went back into the vineyard and dropped those which were slow to colour up. This helps to eliminate any green, thin flavours from the finished wine. The grapes were finally handpicked in perfect condition on 7 April 2010 at an optimum 24.3 Brix.
