If you're a fan of soft, subtle, and rich Merlot then your day should have just got a little bit more exciting as we are offering three of our favourites for just $12 a bottle! Included in this mixed case of Merlot are two bottles of the Putiki Bay Waiheke Island Merlot 2006, two bottles of the Hay Maker by Mud House Merlot 2011 and two bottles of Kevern Walker 'Lighthouse' Reserve Merlot 2004.
The Putiki Bay Waiheke Island Merlot 2006 is a predominantly Merlot blend, with malbec added for complexity and structure in the Bordeaux style. It's a complex, rich and full bodied wine. Ripe fruit flavours, integrated oak and a long finish makes this wine one of distinction and finesse. Putiki Bay Vineyard was a small enterprise of 5 Hectacres located on the prime grape growing area of Waiheke Island, but it has now closed its doors. This idyllic coastal site near Auckland was a climate perfect for growing red wine grapes. Their aim was to produce low volume wines of top quality. Their wines were always a huge hit at the Devonport Wine & Food festival.
Ruby red in colour the Hay Maker by Mud House Merlot 2011 is a medium bodied Hawkes Bay Merlot with inviting aromas of plum, cherries, mocha spice and a touch of peppermint. The fruit flavours follow through onto the palate with well structured tannins. A great match with beef and lamb dishes.
The Kevern Walker 'Lighthouse' Reserve Merlot 2004 received 4 stars (86/100) from Bob Campbell, MW: "Stylish red with an appealing mix of berry, plum, spice, new leather and strong oak flavours. It’s a tight, smooth-textured Merlot that’s showing the beginning of good bottle age characters". Many of NZ's best Merlots are being grown in the Hawke's Bay region and this winery is a perfect example of the standards being attained.
